Night on Earth

Night on Earth is also the name of a film by Jim Jarmush, in which five taxi drivers take us through the night of five cities, starting with Los Angeles — where a very young and androgynous Winona Ryder drives a woman connected to the fashion/movie world, who tries to convince her to become an actress — arguing against her wishes of becoming a car mechanic… Going through New York, Paris, Rome and Helsinki — the adventures of the nocturnal hours when a large part of the city sleeps. In Rome, Roberto Benigni transports a priest who ends up dying in the cab. In Paris the passenger is blind but not to be fooled…

Which journey would that be, the one of a taxi in the centre of Oporto?
Behind the vision of a sleeping city, one would see a dying one. On a first, pedestrian level, lit by colorful window displays featuring the last remnants of fashion, Antwerp, Hamburg or Vienna wouldn’t look much different. On a second level, illuminated by street lamps, we come across what we suppose to be offices or even stockrooms for those shops. Yet, in the gloom we notice that the upper spaces are empty. Then if we take a parallel street, every second house is empty, the picture is depressive and the title would be more tragic.

Living in this city, as if anesthetized, we stop feeling that emptiness.

We chose the movie theater Águia d’Ouro as a paradigmatic example. Inactive for countless years, few have memory of its golden days. Many never got to know it before its decay or even the ruin that it is today. Thus, against the numbness induced by this city that rots more rapidly that it renovates itself, we present this short video that shows the announcing of a film. “Night on Earth”. For that is what happens each new day in Oporto. It grows dark. It becomes gloomy. It grows old.
